During the summer we spent six weeks in the Þórsmörk (Thor's Forest) National Park in Iceland as volunteers. Our work included mostly building and maintaining the trails on different mountain hikes. We managed to construct dozens wooden and stone steps, as well as wooden and stone drainage - they make the trails safer and more comfortable to walk and also help in the battle against erosion and in preserving the trails for the future. In the work process we were able to learn many useful skills and we met many amazing people from all over the world. Every working day brought with it many challenges - strong wind, rain, sun, progressively heavier backpacks with tools and materials, as well as many kilometers to carry them, but the beauty of the surrounding nature relieved us of all these hardships and in the end our eyes and hearts remained full.
While we were there The Reykjavik Grapevine issued an article about our project and the person organizing it, you can read it here.
